Birdwatching in Poland: a responsible guide to Krajna
Krajna cannot guarantee any particular species. Its mosaic of lakes, reedbeds, farmland, damp hollows and woodland does, however, reward patient observation throughout the year.
Think habitats, not a checklist
The official fauna description for Krajna Landscape Park lists waterbirds, cranes, storks, birds of prey and owls. This confirms occurrence across the park, not a sighting at one precise point.
Lake Mochel as a starting point
Publicly accessible areas offer views of open water, reeds and the shore. Early hours are often quieter. Keep extra distance during the breeding season.
Farmland and villages
Cranes and white storks belong to the open rural landscape. The 2025 survey recorded 26 white-stork nest locations in the municipality, 19 occupied and 52 young. This is a historical season snapshot, not a live count.
A simple two-hour plan
Choose a public lakeside section or rural road, listen for ten minutes, then move slowly. Record time, habitat and behaviour. If a bird reacts anxiously, increase your distance immediately.
Equipment
Binoculars, an offline map, weatherproof clothing and a notebook are enough to start. A long lens never replaces distance. Avoid flash and loud camera sounds.
Ethics
Do not play calls to lure birds, inspect nests or enter protected areas. Do not publish sensitive breeding locations in real time. The bird's welfare comes before a photograph or list.
Every season is different
Spring brings song and breeding behaviour, autumn migration, and winter clearer views through leafless trees. Wind, cold and ice remain safety factors around water.

- Record the sighting without publishing sensitive locations.
